They were among 15 crew-members of a troubled fishing ship numbered BTh 97478TS, which previously lost contact with the mainland and sank due to high waves on July 10. The distressed fishermen had to move to basket boats and then four of them were found by Fishing Ship BD 96935 TS of Captain Le Minh Thu from Binh Dinh province on July 19.

When receiving an order from the headquarters of the Coast Guar Region 3 Command, Coast Guard Ship 7011 quickly left for the scene and reached Fishing Ship BD 96935 TS at 7:45 p.m. on July 20 about 155 nautical miles East-Northeastern of Phu Quy Island in Binh Thuan province.

According to Captain Le Khanh Hai of Ship 7011, due to complicated weather conditions, his ship sent a medical team to provide first aid for the fishermen first.

The coast guard ship then took all distressed fishermen to shore for further emergency treatment at the General Hospital of Ninh Hoa Town.

The Ministry of National Defense directed the Naval Service to deploy two DHC-6 Twin Otter Series 400 and four surface ships to search for the missing fishermen of Fishing Ship BTh 97478 TS while ordering the Air Defense - Air Force Service to deploy two Casa NC-212i light military transport aircraft to continue expanding the search range. In addition, units of Military Region 7, Army Corps 18, and the Department of Search and Rescue under the Ministry of National Defense also actively coordinated with the Naval Service and other forces to enhance the search for victims at sea.
