On implementing a campaign to assist impoverished families in 2009, Thu Lum Border Post realized that a lot of studious children had to stop their schooling due to poverty.
In order to provide them with stable living and learning conditions, the commanding officer of the post then decided to look after a number of disadvantaged children. At the same time, he asked for the permission from the Lai Chau provincial Border Guard Command and carried out legal procedures to adopt two La Hu ethnic children, Ma Mo Ha and Sung Su Xa.
“To provide the best conditions for the children to live and study, we’ve prepared accommodation and assigned individuals in the unit, including the deputy political commissar, youth union organization and the armed squad, to taking care of them. The unit has adopted eight children so far, two of whom have finished high school and become family's breadwinners; three are 10th graders at Muong Te Ethnic Boarding High School. Three other children Sung Phi Gia, Lo Xu Tu and Gong Xi Xa studying at Thu Lum Secondary School were adopted at the beginning of 2021,” said Major Cao Van Quy, Political Commissar of Thu Lum Border Post.

Love and compassion towards their adopted children of the post is well-expressed in the neatly-arranged accommodation for the adopted.
“Without the soldiers’ support, it is impossible for me to attend school due to my family’s hardships. Thanks to their attentive care, we have made progress and become accustomed to the life here. I'll strive to study so as to return and develop my village," said Sung Phi Gia, a seventh-grader at Thu Lum Secondary School.
Under the border guards’ guidance, the children gradually build up their dreams and strive more in learning.
“The eight adopted children have very similar circumstances. We are trying to help them develop in an all-round manner. The unit has also collaborated with the schools and teachers to closely grasp their learning outcomes and psychological developments and encourage them to study better,” said Major Cao Van Quy.
It is a noble and deeply humane deed of Thu Lum Border Post to adopt those students and bring them up for over 12 years now, which is highly appreciated by the local government and residents.
According to Tran Duc Hien, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Muong Te district, “the adoption of the children is meaningful and humane, giving the children opportunities to go to school and receive good upbringing and guidance.”
“Every time I visit the border post, the children greet me politely and respectfully, which shows that they are well-educated. I believe that on receiving the border guards’ upbringing, they will become good citizens with more devotion to their homeland. I hope that they will gain more knowledge and continue with their higher education to contribute more to their villages and hometowns in the future,” Hien added.
