In the first stage, the new museum will display exhibits in six topics according to the progress of the history and large outdoor artifacts and open for the public in early July. In the second stage, there will be eight thematic areas, seven collections and 12 military specialties.

The outdoor display will provide visitors with new experiences and interactions. Typical military works, such as Bach Dang stake battlefield, Dien Bien Phu Theater, Truong Son road, and Cu Chi tunnel will be reappeared.
Apart from exhibits that closely attached to outstanding figures and big events in the resistance wars against the French colonialists and the U.S. imperialists, the museum has four national treasures, including two MiG-21 aircraft, number 4324 and 5121, a T54B tank numbered 843 and the Ho Chi Minh Campaign determination map. Notably, on display in this new museum is a C-130 military transport aircraft that the U.S. Army used in the war in Vietnam.

Colonel Le Vu Huy, Director of the museum, said that the newly-built museum applies technological advances, including 3D mapping, and automatic narration devices to help visitors grasp information about the exhibits and related stories without guides.
The museum also gives students a chance to act as tank drivers, experience the atmosphere in Hanoi in the 12 fierce day-and-night battle in 1972.
The museum expects to welcome more visitors at its new venue.

At its current address on Dien Bien Phu Street, the museum welcomes 1,000 - 2,000 tourists per day. During Tet holidays or big festivals of the country and the military, it has welcomed a maximum of 5,000 visitors.
