The defense delegation also included Deputy Defense Minister, Senior Lieutenant General Tran Don; Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, Major General Ngo Minh Tien; as well as representatives of under-ministerial agencies.

At the working session, Rector of the Military Medical Academy, Lieutenant General Do Quyet, briefed the defense minister and other delegates on the academy’s role and functions, saying that its central political missions are to provide medical and pharmaceutical training courses at various levels from elementary to undergraduate and postgraduate to serve the military health sector, the country’s industrialization-modernization and international cooperation; and study, develop, apply medical and pharmaceutical research projects, particularly those directly serving combat readiness missions of military units and national socio-economic development.

Additionally, the academy, with a system of military hospitals is responsible for providing healthcare. medical examinations, treatment of troops, medical insurance holders and people, giving professional instructions to lower-level medical institutions and facilities, preventing and fighting epidemics, participating in disaster relief and rescue missions, staffing the infirmary with medical personnel on Nam Yet island of Truong Sa district, training the staff of Level 2 Field Hospital No2 to be deployed to a UN peacekeeping mission by the end of 2019, promoting cooperation with international partners to improve the quality of its training, scientific research and treatment.

It has trained some 1,400 undergraduate students of all kinds, 330 medical specialists and 150 postgraduate students, including 50 PhDs, per year on average.

Regarding its scientific research, the academy conducted 185 research projects at various levels in 2018 only.

Concluding the working session, the defense minister recognized and highly appreciated the good results achieved by the Academy’s Party Committee, Directorate and the whole staff over the past years, particularly its achievements in medical examination, treatment, scientific research and professional training.

Regarding its tasks in the coming time, General Lich asked its leadership to direct its subordinates to thoroughly grasp and seriously implement all resolutions and directives of the Party, Central Military Commission and Defense Ministry with a focus on the Resolutions of the fourth and sixth Meetings of the Party Central Committee of the 12th term as well as Directive 5 of the Politburo and Directive 87 of the Central Military Commission on enhancing the movement “Learning and following Ho Chi Minh’s thought, morals and style” in couple with the movement “Promoting the glorious traditions of the Vietnam People’s Army, devoting talent, deserving to be “Uncle Ho’s soldiers.”

The academy’s leadership was also requested to focus on building a strong and pure Party organization, improving the quality of its staff work and leadership, well perform logistic, technical and financial work, accelerate the progress of the project to rebuild Military Hospital 103, and enhance administrative reforms.

General Lich also asked the academy to further improve the quality and effectiveness of its education, training and scientific research while directing its affiliated hospitals and healthcare facilities to provide best medical and healthcare services to both military and civilian patients. He suggested the academy should always be a reliable healthcare address while maintaining its leading role in medical training and scientific research in the military and in the country.

Earlier, the defense minister and other delegates had a tour around the construction site of Military Hospital 103. He encouraged the builders to speed up the construction to soon put new facilities of the hospital into operation.
