PANO - Doctors from Military Hospital 4 of Military Zone 4 of the Vietnam People's Army on November 1st instructed medical personnel at Con Co Island's Infirmary in Quang Tri province to successfully perform an appendectomy for a patient.
The patient, Sergeant Le Cong Thu, is a soldier of the island's mixed battalion. Thu had a stomachache in the morning of November 1st. His symptom was diagnosed as acute appendicitis and he needed urgent surgery.
The island infirmary had to report to the provincial Military Command due to its poor conditions for the surgery. The command instructed the hospital to fly a medical team to the island, but they could not land on the island because of strong winds and bad weather.
Finally, the hospital's Director Colonel Hoang Nghia Nam together with other doctors directed and instructed non-commissioned officer Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Quoc Hoat and his team from the island infirmary to operate the surgery.
After two hours, the surgery finished successfully. The patient then was safely taken ashore and moved to the military hospital for further treatment.
