Weathering difficulties, making thorough preparations
During the competition, the weather changed erratically. The outdoor temperature sometimes reached more than 40 degrees Celsius, and then it suddenly rained, making the training field slippery. However, those difficulties only made competitors show higher determination.

Competitors practice ensuring smooth communication. |
Despite the scorching sun, non-commissioned First Lieutenant Nguyen Hong Thai, head of the squad of terminal communication vehicles of Military Region 1 promptly commanded the signal crews to take preparation steps, drive the vehicles through terrains, deploy the vehicles, make declaration, connection and complete other communication services according to the organizer’s question ahead of the scheduled time. Their performances were highly appreciated by the jury.
Senior Colonel Vu Viet Hoang, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Signal Corps, shared that it was the first time such a competition had been organized at the whole military level. Therefore, the organizer worked closely with other relevant agencies and units to develop plans, build regulations, and schedules for the competition. They also made good preparations to ensure close-to-reality competition contents.
According to Col. Hoang, in this competition, 218 athletes from 29 teams were divided into three group categories, namely military regions, arms and services; general departments, the Vietnam Border Guard Command and Hanoi Capital Command; and army corps and affiliated units of the Signal Corps.
Along with knowledge of such majors as consultation, politics, logistics, technical services tested, participating teams competed in daytime and nighttime integrated exercises. In the daytime exercise, terminal vehicles, radio vehicles, and technical vehicles competed in nine events, namely starting, driving vehicles through different terrains, deploying the vehicle, ensuring communication, recovering the vehicle, crossing obstacles; running 100m to the finish line, finishing, and shooting. The Vsat stations competed in eight events, excluding the event of driving the vehicle through different terrains.
Affirming professional expertise, creatively handling situations
In the daytime exercise, almost all crew-members were well-prepared, and carried equipment in a firm, full, unified and regular manner. Attentively, the commanding style of heads of stations was decisive, bringing confidence to other members. The jury highly praised such style.
Events, including driving the vehicle through different terrains, deploying the vehicle, ensuring communication, recovering the vehicle were important, requiring the smooth coordination among crew-members and the expertise of each member. The jury observed their performances both directly and via a camera system. With thorough preparations, all crew-members upheld their bravery, and showed their competence and capability. The declaration, connection and assurance of communication services were made accurately and in accordance with the operating mode, communication convention, ensuring accurate signal transmission and receipt. Notably, some teams creatively shortened the task performance time.
Different from the daytime integrated exercise, the nighttime one required specialized vehicles to perform six events. Each event had different requirements for each type of vehicles and services. However, the event contents were quite similar to those in the daytime exercise but the level was more difficult due to limited visibility. Despite difficulties, participating teams all showed high resolve and met all requirements. Many candidates gained higher results than those during their training at units and closer to results of the signal contingent in the Army Games.
After a week, the competition ended successfully. The results of the competition reflected the actual level of mobile communication detachments in the whole military.
Senior Colonel Tran Ba Khuong, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Signal Corps and head of the jury, said that suggestions will be made on the basis of the competition results to the leadership of the Signal Corps to later direct signal units in the whole military to continue training, fostering troops to improve their competence and help ensure smooth communication in any situations.
