The meeting attracted more than 100 delegations from U.N. member states and international organizations.

Addressing the event, Gen. Tan said that although Vietnam has engaged in U.N. peacekeeping operations since May 2014, the country has achieved remarkable results.

According to the Vietnamese general, Vietnam has deployed nearly 1,100 servicemembers to U.N. peacekeeping missions. The country has consistently encouraged and created opportunities for servicewomen to participate in peacekeeping activities. Additionally, it has regularly coordinated with the U.N. and other international partners to conduct training courses and joint exercises.

Gen. Tan also affirmed that Vietnam will continue to maintain its peacekeeping forces in the field and is committed to expanding its engagement through the deployment of new unit types, such as mechanized infantry, military police, communications, and mission protection units.

The Vietnamese head delegate emphasized that Vietnam is committed to promoting and increasing the participation of servicewomen in peacekeeping operations. Moreover, it will strengthen collaboration with international partners to enhance training capacity and readiness for future U.N. peacekeeping missions.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Gen. Tan held a bilateral meeting with the Canadian head delegate Giles Norman, Director General of the Transnational Threats and Conflicts Bureau of Canada. During the meeting, Gen. Tan stressed that the Vietnamese MND highly values its defense cooperation with Canada, particularly in peacekeeping.

He suggested that both sides effectively implement the signed Memorandum of Understanding on peacekeeping cooperation and expressed hope that Canada would share its experience, provide support, and endorse Vietnam’s initiative to nominate officers for positions as Deputy Force Commander and Force Commander at U.N. peacekeeping missions.

Gen. Tan also had a sideline meeting with U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare.
