Promoting women’s participation in U.N. peacekeeping mission
PANO - The Vietnam Department for Peacekeeping Operations (VNDPKO), in cooperation with the Defense Attaché Office under the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, on November 3 in Hanoi, held a conference to share experience in women, peace, and security.
The VNDPKO’s Deputy Director Senior Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh and First Secretary for Defense Policy Peita Spence from the Australian Embassy to Vietnam co-chaired the event.

The conference aimed to promote the U.N. women, peace and security agenda, while sharing information and experience in the deployment of female officers to take part in the U.N. peacekeeping operations, so as to enhance the status, role and equal participation of women in maintaining peace and security in the world.
Delegates at the event discussed challenges facing women in U.N. peacekeeping missions, and preparation work for female officers’ deployment to U.N. missions for the first time, as well as contributed comments so as to create potential environments for women.
Senior Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh affirmed that issues on women, peace and security are always in the top list of the U.N. agenda, especially in the field of peacekeeping. The U.N. has reduced a number of some member states in the U.N. peacekeeping force when these countries do not meet the targets for the proportion of women.
Having joined the U.N. peacekeeping force since 2014, Vietnam has tried its best to realize its commitment about the issue. So far, over 70 female officers have been sent to U.N. missions. The country will overcome difficulties to ensure its sustainable participation of female officers in the U.N. peacekeeping force.

Addressing the conference, Ms. Peita Spence acknowledged Vietnam’s achievements in promoting the participating of women in U.N. peacekeeping operations as well as in global cooperation in implementing the Agenda on women, peace and security in U.N. peacekeeping activities.
Vietnamese female officers also delivered their speeches at the event, affirming the role of women in U.N. peacekeeping activities and sharing their experience in reality.
