Preparations made for field exercise on U.N. peacekeeping 2023 in Vietnam
PANO - Vietnam and Japan have just co-held the 17th Meeting of the Experts’ Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations (EWG PKO) Cycle 4 for the 2021-2023 period in the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) and a conference to map out the plan for the field exercise on U.N. peacekeeping 2023 in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese delegation was led by Senior Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
Director for Defense Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region of the International Policy Division of the Defense Policy Bureau under the Japanese Ministry of Defense, cum Head of the Japanese Peacekeeping Experts’ Group Matsuzawa Tomoko, and Senior Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh co-chaired the event.

The meeting was to evaluate activities related to the implementation of U.N. peacekeeping operations, including pre-deployment training, initiative for peace, coordination between member countries and the U.N. for effective participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations, among others.
Meanwhile, the event also focused on preparation work for the field exercise on U.N. peacekeeping 2023 in Vietnam. Accordingly, the delegates discussed exercise program, scenarios, and technical and logistic work, to name but a few.

On the sidelines of the event, the Vietnamese delegation paid courtesy call on Japanese Deputy Defense Minister Oka Masami. At the meeting, the Japanese defense leader hailed the cooperation between Vietnam and Japan in U.N. peacekeeping operations, considering it an important part in the bilateral defense cooperation.
The event also contributed to promoting the bilateral defense cooperation in general and cooperation in U.N. peacekeeping missions in particular.
