General Nguyen Tan Cuong receives Ambassador Carmen Cano De Lasala.

At the meeting, General Cuong highly appreciated the strong progress in relations between Vietnam and Spain across various areas, from politics and diplomacy, defense and security, to economy and trade, culture, sports, and tourism. He highlighted the significance of the Spanish Prime Minister’s first official visit to Vietnam in April 2025 since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1977.

He expressed confidence that the bilateral relationship would continue to grow in a more substantive and effective manner, commensurate with the Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

An overview of the meeting

Emphasizing defense cooperation as an area of particular interest to the senior leadership of both nations, the Chief of the General Staff noted that the two sides had achieved many positive results in recent years. He thanked the Spanish Ministry of Defense for supporting the Vietnam Defense Expo by sending delegations and participating with exhibition booths. Notably, Airbus took part in both the 2022 and 2024 editions. On this occasion, General Cuong cordially invited the Ambassador, the Spanish Ministry of Defense, and Spain’s defense industry enterprises to attend the upcoming third Vietnam Defense Expo.

Looking ahead, he proposed that both sides continue to effectively implement agreed areas of cooperation based on the shared understanding of senior leaders of the two countries, focusing on delegation exchanges at all levels, training, United Nations peacekeeping, and mutual support at multilateral forums. These efforts, he stressed, would help strengthen bilateral cooperation in a more effective and substantive manner.

The Vietnamese defense leader expressed his hope for the continued support and attention of the Ambassador to further deepen Vietnam - Spain defense cooperation in line with the potential and aspirations of both sides.

For her part, Ambassador Carmen Cano De Lasala thanked the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense for the warm reception and underscored that 2025 marks an important milestone in Vietnam - Spain cooperation. She affirmed that Vietnam is a trusted partner of Spain and expressed the hope that bilateral defense ties would expand further in the coming years, especially in defense industry and U.N. peacekeeping.
