The event was chaired by Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Defense Minister and Head of the MND’s Steering Committee on Vietnam’s Participation in U.N. Peacekeeping Operations.

On behalf of the Central Military Commission and MND’s leaders, Gen. Chien congratulated the two units on their outstanding achievements at U.N. missions in Abyei and South Sudan and praised the Engineering Company Rotation 1’s 11 members who continue their mission at the second company.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Chief of the General Department of Political Affairs Senior Lieutenant General Trinh Van Quyet highly appreciated the peacekeepers’ efforts in overcoming difficulties to complete assigned missions, contributing to popularizing the image and cultural beauty of the Vietnamese people and virtues of Uncle Ho’s soldiers to international colleagues. 

During their tenure, the Vietnamese engineers actively conducted their professional duties, including building, repairing, and upgrading barracks, bridges, and roads, contributing to making positive changes in infrastructure in Abyei. Meanwhile, the L2FH Rotation 4 received and provided treatment for 1,468 people, exceeding the U.N.’s requirements. The enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, and wholeheartedness of the Vietnamese military doctors and nurses and their efforts left good impressions on patients.

The two units’ personnel demonstrated their good competence, professional working style, and enthusiasm which were highly appreciated by relevant agencies, missions’ commanding officers, international colleagues, and local people.

At the conference, Gen. Chien and Gen. Quyet asked the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations to work closely with relevant agencies and units to conduct human resource training, draw lessons from previous units’ task performance, and continue to promote vanguard spirit to undertake and fulfill assigned missions, among others. 

The deputy defense minister emphasized the need to foster international cooperation in U.N. peacekeeping operations and hoped that international organizations and partners would continue supporting Vietnam in deploying forces to missions and completing assigned missions. 

At the conference, the MND and the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army honored the two units’ collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in joining U.N. peacekeeping operations at the U.N. Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and the U.N. Mission in South Sudan in the 2022-2023 tenure. The Defense Minister presented certificates of merits to two collectives and 25 individuals, and Chief of the General Staff honored three collectives and 74 individuals.

Talking with the People’s Army Newspaper’s reporter on the sidelines of the conference, U.N. Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis affirmed that the U.N. highly appreciates and recognizes the valuable contribution of the Vietnamese Government to U.N. peacekeeping activities and welcomes Vietnam's commitment to expanding its participation in other areas and actively supporting U.N. peacekeeping operations.

She spoke highly of the country’s realization of its commitment to increasing the proportion of female peacekeepers, considering it comprehensive contribution to the U.N.
