The event was chaired by Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr, Force Commander and Acting Head of Mission for the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and attended by Senior Colonel Mac Duc Trong, Head of the Vietnamese Engineering Company Rotation 1.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr said that smart camp is an important project of the mission. The mission initially decided to start the construction of the project in Dokura base, but later chose to build the first sites at Highway, Athony, and Agok bases.
According to UNISFA’s Force Commander, the construction of smart camps requires the cooperation of agencies and units from different countries. Practical experience from the construction of the project will help better build future ones.

Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr affirmed the decision on choosing the Vietnamese Engineering Company Rotation 1 to be the first unit to carry out the project.
He said that people should visit Highway Base to see Vietnamese engineers transforming this area. He recalled that the Vietnamese engineering force repaired roads, built fences, and consolidated accommodation.

The Force Commander of UNISFA expressed strong belief that with experience and competence, Vietnamese engineers will successfully complete the project.
According to Political Commissar of the Vietnamese Engineering Company Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Quang Tuyen, some essential materials for the construction of the smart camp have been gathered at Highway Base. During the unit’s preparation, it has received active and effective participation and cooperation of functional agencies of UNISFA.

Earlier, during the visit to Highway Base and working session with the Vietnamese Engineering Company Rotation 1 on March 6, U.N. Under Secretary-General Atul Khare asked UNISFA to provide adequate materials for the company to repair and upgrade barracks with priority given to the construction of smart camp.
