The two countries share a traditional and close relationship, which has been painstakingly cultivated by generations of leaders and people of the two countries, and built on the efforts and blood of many generations. On the basis of long-standing historical relations and the anti-colonial struggle, Viet Nam and Cambodia officially established diplomatic relations on June 24, 1967, marking a new chapter in bilateral ties and creating favorable conditions for the two peoples to continue standing side by side in the national liberation struggle and achieve the historic victory in the spring of 1975. The solidarity and mutual assistance were even more evident when the two nations joined hands to overthrow the brutal Pol Pot genocidal regime in 1979, helping revive the land of Cambodia.

Over the past years, the traditional, friendly, close, and comprehensive cooperation between Viet Nam and Cambodia has continuously witnessed new positive development. Both sides constantly support and assist each other for peace, stability, and prosperity.

Accordingly, political relations remain solid, playing a core role in orienting overall bilateral ties. The two sides have enhanced high-level delegation exchanges through various channels, maintained regular discussions in multiple formats, and effectively promoted bilateral cooperation mechanisms.

Defense and security cooperation has affirmed its role as an important pillar, becoming increasingly practical and effective. This is based on the principle of not allowing any hostile forces to use their respective territories to harm the other’s security and interests. Viet Nam and Cambodia have stepped up economic cooperation, assisting each other in building independent and self-reliant economies while ensuring deep and effective international integration. Investment and trade cooperation remains a bright spot, with two-way trade turnover reaching USD 8.7 billion in the first eight months of 2026, up 8.3 percent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, the two sides have promoted information sharing, communication, and education to help people from all walks of life, especially the younger generation, accurately understand the history of the traditional friendship. They also promote joint efforts to preserve, promote, and embellish Viet Nam - Cambodia Friendship Monuments, considering them invaluable historical assets that contribute to tradition education, consolidate social foundations, and foster stable, long-term relations. Viet Nam and Cambodia regularly coordinate and support each other at international, regional, and sub-regional forums, helping elevate each country’s prestige and position on the global stage.

Amidst complex regional and global developments, the Viet Nam - Cambodia relationship is increasingly recognized as an invaluable shared asset of the two nations. Regardless of changing times, mutual assistance for prosperity, equality, and peaceful co-existence remains an enduring truth.
