The Cuu Long River Delta has been projected to become the energy centre of Vietnam by 2020 with three power supplying sources, O Mon, Ca Mau and Kien Luong with total capacity of between 9,000-9,400MW of electricity and gas generated from the Southwestern mines.

The Prime Minister has approved a project to turn the region into the national economic hub and at the same time the centre of agriculture and aquaculture, playing a major exporting role of agricultural products.

The GDP of the Mekong River Delta is set to increase by 1.2 times during 2009-2010 and another 1.25 times in 2011-2020 compared to the national level. The regional GDP is expected to hold 11.6% and 13.3% in the national GDP by 2010 and 2020 instead of the current 10.5%, respectively.
