In a writing for the People’s Army Newspaper on February 22, Lt. Col. Anh emphasized that the institute’s mastering of the core technologies in the field of aerospace is a breakthrough in hi-tech defense industry field in Vietnam.

He recalled the establishment of Viettel Group with the main duty of economic development. However, the group has always carried the traditional values of Uncle Ho's soldiers while undertaking the mission of Fatherland building and protection. For Viettel people, doing hard work that no one has done is their culture, he wrote.

Defense Minister General Phan Van Giang visits Viettel Aerospace Institute in 2022.

With their experience, great resources in telecommunications and information technology, pro-activeness and responsibility, Viettel Group proposed engagement in developing hi-tech defense industry to the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense.

In August 2014, the Central Military Commission approved a project on researching, designing, and manufacturing hi-tech military technical equipment in the field of aerospace. In January 2015, the Prime Minister approved the above project, and assigned the Ministry of National Defense to manage it and Viettel Group to carry out it.

On January 18, 2016, General Director of Viettel Group signed Decision No.21 to temporarily establish Viettel Aerospace Institute.

On February 25, 2017, the Ministry of National Defense issued Decision No.501 on setting up Viettel Aerospace Institute under Viettel Group with the missions of researching, designing, creating, and manufacturing hi-tech military technical equipment to meet the Ministry of National Defense’s requirements and serve the people. The institute was also tasked with cooperating with domestic and international partners to conduct research and develop science and technology, build and train human resources in the area of aerospace.

That was a historic decision for the birth and development of Viettel Aerospace Institute. February 25 became the foundation day of the institute.

Noting that aerospace is a new area requiring high technology and qualifications and not many countries in the world have succeeded in the field, Viettel Aerospace Institute’s director emphasized that it is not easy to have access to technologies in this field because of its high security. Therefore, it is a must to master the design, integration of the system and core technologies of products, apply experience and team with civilian and military partners to produce components.

The institute started their work from easy and small to large and difficult ones and applied advanced technologies, such as simulation models, and supercomputer systems. This approach contributed to increasing the number of trials, shortening the research process, and optimizing costs.

Attentively, it has effectively carried out policies to attract good and leading experts in aerospace. Many of its personnel have worked for world’s leading aerospace companies such as Boeing, Airbus. Notably, it has a professional workplace with modern infrastructure and internationally-recognized processes and standards.

Last year, Viettel Aerospace Institute’s two Ministry of National Defense-level important strategic products were approved, contributing to the new development of Vietnam’s defense industry sector and national building and defense.

Since its establishment, the institute has conducted 32 scientific and technological missions with half of them approved. Nearly its 200 ideas and initiatives have been applied to production, business, bringing billions of VND for the military. In addition, it has had nearly 200 inventions protected by the National Office of Intellectual Property. Especially, it has sent nearly 20 patents to the United States (U.S.) Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for registration and some have been recognized.

With its great efforts, the institute has always been recognized as a comprehensively strong and exemplary unit. It was honored with the Government’s emulation flag in 2017 and 2020 and the Ministry of National Defense’s emulation flag in 2016, 2019, and 2021 and the title “Determined-to-win” Unit in 2018.

With its achievements, the institute was honored with the first-class Fatherland Protection Order by the Party and State on December 13, 2021.

Bringing into play its outcomes, and deserving the trust of leaders of the Party, the State, the Central Military Commission, the Ministry of National Defense and with the desire to master technology, Viettel Aerospace Institute will continue to research, design, manufacture more new advanced and modern products for the military and strive to become the key in Vietnam's hi-tech defense industrial complex in the time ahead, affirmed Lt. Col. Vu Tuan Anh.
