Reuters once noted that Viettel takes "a path many investors fear," citing its ventures into challenging markets like Haiti, Burundi, and Mozambique. In 2010, despite a devastating earthquake in Haiti that prompted other investors to withdraw, Viettel honored its commitment. Its team arrived just three days after the disaster to build a network from scratch.

Two decades ago, overseas expansion was considered a risky move for the then-unknown company. However, Deputy General Director Dao Xuan Vu noted that Viettel believed it must compete globally to turn professional and break through its limits. This vision began in 2006 with a six-person team in Cambodia. Today, Viettel operates 11 companies serving 600 million people, competing with giants like Vodafone and Orange.

Viettel leads in seven countries, including Cambodia and Burundi, by prioritizing widespread infrastructure. Its strategy shifts telecommunications from a luxury to an essential service, even in remote areas like the Amazon or rural Tanzania. Instead of a single global name, Viettel develops localized brands integrated into host communities. During a 2024 visit to Metfone in Cambodia, Party General Secretary To Lam praised Viettel for enhancing Vietnam’s international image.

After 20 years, international investment is a strategic pillar, with overseas revenue growing over 20% annually and creating 700,000 jobs. Capital recovery has reached 92%, and overseas subscribers now outnumber domestic ones. Beyond figures, Viettel provides remote populations with access to digital services, finance, and education.

Looking ahead, Chairman and General Director Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang stated the group aims to expand into high-tech industries, e-commerce, and logistics, targeting developed markets in Europe and the Americas. By fostering a globally capable workforce, Viettel remains committed to proving that Vietnamese resilience can succeed on the global stage.
