Apple lists Viettel as operator offering eSIM service
PANO – The Military-run Industry-Telecoms Group Viettel on August 21 was named by Apple to provide cellular plans on eSIM (electronic SIM) for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR devices.
Viettel is the first operator in Vietnam to be among Apple’s list of 60 wireless carriers implementing eSIMs. The list includes over 40 countries worldwide.
In order to receive this recognition, Viettel had to pass a number of specific tests and requirements by Apple.
The Vietnamese telecom business uses eSIM management solutions by Thales Group (France). The French company has sold these solutions to many large mobile network operators including Vodafone, Singtel, Orange, Softbank, Verizon, Telefonica, and KT.
Since its eSIM implementation announcement in February 2019, Viettel has had nearly 60,000 subscribers use eSIMs. The number of eSIM users is expected to increase by 7,000-10,000 a month.
According to Deputy General Director of Viettel Network Le Ba Tan, Viettel will test the eSIM technology on other devices, including the Apple Watch series. Viettel also plans to provide its standardized eSIMs for the IoT market in the 2019-2020 period.
