Aged 29 years old, Capt. Hieu has led numerous technology projects worth hundreds of billions of VND, successfully making an impact in both domestic and international markets.

From passion for technology to hundred-billion-VND projects

Born in 1996 in Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province (now Quang Tri province), Hieu grew up in a family with a tradition in education. From a young age, he showed a passion for computers during visits to his uncle, an IT teacher. With guidance and self-learning, he consistently won top prizes in Informatics competitions during his school years.

Determined to pursue technology research to create practical products for life, Hieu chose to study Information Technology at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology. After the second year at university, he pro-actively applied for an internship at Viettel. Thanks to his capabilities, he was officially recruited by Viettel in 2019 and began working for Viettel Solutions - the unit specializing in providing digital solutions for the government and enterprises.

At Viettel Solutions, the first project Hieu participated in was the development of an intelligent traffic monitoring and enforcement system. When the system was deployed in Hai Phong - the first major city in Vietnam to implement such a system city-wide, Hieu and his team faced many challenges. Although the system had been completed, the client requested additional features during installation. Therefore, Hieu and his colleagues spent many days working and staying at the Hai Phong Traffic Police Department, closely observing operations, making adjustments, and rebuilding a better software version. The system was developed into a smart traffic ecosystem, not just about installing surveillance cameras and issuing fines, but also integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize traffic behaviors, adjust traffic signals based on weather conditions, analyze vehicle density, and provide real-time data for both authorities and the public.

The system has been replicated in more than 30 provinces and cities nationwide, including Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, and others, generating more than VND 200 billion in revenue for Viettel Solutions.

In addition, Hieu has led several other high-value technology projects, such as digital office platforms and Internet of Things (IoT) applications for flood monitoring, to name but a few.

World-class technology products

Not stopping at conquering the domestic market, the technology products developed by Hieu and his team have also made their mark internationally in countries such as Peru and the city of Dubai in the UAE. “I want to create world-class products to prove that Vietnam is capable of mastering the most advanced technologies in the world,” shared Hieu.

The TrafficID project (a solution in the smart traffic ecosystem in Peru) marked the first successful step in their journey to conquer international markets. This was followed by the smart traffic system in Dubai, where Hieu represented Viettel to present the product to clients. He felt truly proud of having contributed to bringing “Make in Vietnam” technology products to the international stage.

Currently, Viettel Solutions is implementing many projects in countries across the Middle East. This presents an opportunity for Hieu and his team to further develop, but it also poses significant challenges. It requires young engineers not only to be highly skilled in technology, but also possess project management abilities abroad, as well as understand local laws to propose practical implementation solutions tailored to each country.

Inspiring and motivating junior colleagues

To achieve the successes he enjoys today, Capt. Hieu credited the collective efforts of the whole Development Department 2, which consists of nearly 30 staff members, most of whom belong to Gen Z.

As a head, Hieu chose to lead by actions and expertise rather than authority. According to him, a leader’s credibility must be proven through capability. Therefore, in addition to continuously improving his own leadership and management skills, Hieu also constantly thinks creatively and innovates to keep up with technological advancements.

Having been directly guided by Capt. Hieu since his internship and now an official employee at Viettel Solutions, Nguyen Quang Thinh (23 years old, a top graduate from the University of Engineering and Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) shared that during his early days as an intern at Viettel Solutions, Capt. Hieu patiently guided me, not only in technical knowledge but also in quickly adapting to the working environment. When Capt. Hieu learned about his difficult family situation, he regularly encouraged him, created favorable conditions for him to take care of his family, and even proposed support from higher levels to assist his family in time.

According to Le Thanh Cong, Deputy General Director of Viettel Solutions, Viettel considers people the core element of success, and individuals grow through challenges. That’s why they are not hesitant to empower young people and assign them difficult tasks, allowing them to test their abilities and maximize their potential. Capt. Hieu is a shining example of this generation.

Entrusted with leading the Development Department 2, Hieu has not only withstood the pressure and high expectations, but also achieved remarkable results with major projects both at home and abroad. He and other young typical staff at Viettel Solutions have helped drive the Viettel Group’s innovation and creativity, contributing to affirming the position of Vietnamese technology on the international stage.
