PANO - Nghe An Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism inaugurated a monument to Phan Boi Chau, a patriotic scholar of the province, at Phan Boi Chau Memorial Relic Site in Nam Dan town on December 26th.

The same day, the department, the provincial People’s Committee, and Nam Dan district organized a ceremony to celebrate the 145th birth anniversary of Phan Boi Chau, a great cultural activist and the key figure of the movement to fight for the national liberation of Vietnam in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Born in December 26th, 1867 into a poor Confucian family in Dan Nhiem village (now Xuan Hoa commune, Nam Dan district), Phan Boi Chau, or Phan Van San at birth, had set up an anti-French team at the age of 18 and the team had launched a failed surprise attack on Nghe An Citadel.

In 1905, he left for Japan and continued his revolutionary activities. His patriotic prose and verse had a strong impact on the masses as well as patriotic movements in the homeland of Vietnam. His patriotic thoughts became a link between the traditional patriotic thoughts of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh.
