PANO - The Vietnam-Asia Silk Culture Festival was officially kicked off on March 28th in Hoi An, of the central province of Quang Nam, with the participation of 70 silk producers, fashion designers and businesses from nine countries.

The opening ceremony

The festival, part of activities to mark the 41st founding anniversary of Hoi An, attracted more tourists to the locality as well as helped preserve and promote traditional handicraft villages. The festival includes two parts, “Restoring Traditional Culture of Vietnamese Silk”, and “Silk Road into Modern Life”.

There will be an incense offering in commemoration of Quang Nam’s Queen of Silk, an introduction and performance of traditional silk weaving techniques of Tan Chau silk craft village, traditional patterns for Cham people’s wedding as well as the Ca Tu ethnic people’s traditional brocade weaving.

The Quang Nam provincial Culture, Sports, and Tourism Department revealed that in recent years, the province has developed plans to restore weaving villages in Nam Phuoc and Duy Trinh in a bid to save the silk making industry from falling into oblivion. The department also hoped that the festival would contribute to the realization of the strategy to preserve and develop traditional industry and culture, helping promote tourism development in Hoi An and create cooperation opportunities between Vietnamese traditional handicraft villages and foreign counterparts.
