PANO - The year 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of the presence of the European Film Festival in Vietnam’s cinematographic agenda, with the largest number of contributions of European countries as fourteen European Union Member States will be presenting films to the event.

The fourteen participating films come from Austria, Belgium (Wallonie-Brussels), Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Poland, Romania, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom.

They will be screened from 11 to 21 May in Hanoi and from 21 to 30 May 2009 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Organised by the Delegation of the European Commission to Vietnam, the Embassies of EU Member States Embassies and European Cultural Institutes, in collaboration with the Cinema Department, the European Film Festival promises to be a major cinematographic event in the cultural calendars of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with enjoyable and spellbinding screenings for audiences. Breaking down language and cultural barriers, the Festival aims to promote cultural exchange and involve people from across the spectrum of the Vietnamese society.

Held for the first time in 2000, the European Film Festival is recognised as one of the most successful multi-cultural events in Vietnam. The aim of the Festival is to portray the diversity of European cinema to the Vietnamese public. The increasing number of participants each year has proven the event’s attractiveness to Vietnamese audiences. Last year, the event reached approximately 8,000 audiences in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

This cinematic event is part of a broader series of “Europe Days” events clustered around Europe Day (9 May), a cycle which since its inception in 2004 has gained a high profile in the cultural life of Vietnamese people.

The European Film Festival will take place at Hanoi’s National Cinema Centre at 87 Lang Ha and Ho Chi Minh City’s New Galaxy Cinema at 230 Nguyen Trai, District 1.
