Community joins hand to tackle shortage of blood type O
PANO – Hundreds of people came to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion to donate their blood, said Bach Quoc Khanh, Head of the institute, on January 7.
By 19:20 on January 6, the
institute received 308 blood units, including 152 blood units of type O (higher than the average number of blood units collected a day - about 40 people come to the institute a day for blood donation).
In fact, on January 6 more
people with blood type O donated, but by the end of the day only 912 blood
units of type O out of 5,504 blood units were left in storage.
Blood is essential for treating
patients and it is in great scarcity, especially blood type O. The National
Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion expressed its deep thanks to
blood donors and called on more people to come for blood donation in the coming
time, giving chances for patients to come home for the upcoming Lunar New Year
(Tet) holiday.
