According to the “Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi” (Dai Nam Comprehensive Encyclopedia), a Vietnam geographic book published by the Nguyen Dynasty, this species was brought to Hue from Guangdong, China during the reign of King Minh Mang 200 years ago.
The flower is often in bloom from late February to May in the lunar calendar.

To the imaginative eyes of some people, the small Buddha belly blossoms seem to form a beautiful image that resembles "a flying dragon and a dancing phoenix."
Notably, the flower is among 162 typical images of Vietnamese nature and Vietnam produce carved on the nine giant urns in front of The Mieu Temple, considered today as a national treasure of the Nguyen Dynasty.
