The event was jointly organized by the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Vietnam, and the Soc Trang provincial People’s Committee.

Taking place from May 12 to 22, the national week aims to raise public awareness of the efforts to build a society resilient to natural disasters for sustainable development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tran Quang Hoai, Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, shared that with the theme “Sustainable communities to respond to natural disasters,” the National Week this year will concentrate on raising high sense of responsibility of ministries, sectors, and localities for natural disaster prevention and control, especially in rainy season.

Meanwhile, the organizing panel will promote information dissemination and communications activities to increase people’s competence in natural disaster prevention and control, contributing to building a society resilient to natural disasters, he added.

At the event, Vice Chairman of the Soc Trang provincial People’s Committee committed that the province would conduct different practical activities to improve people’s ability in natural disaster prevention and control, especially among youngsters.

On the sidelines of the National Week for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control in Soc Trang province, many other activities will  also be conducted, including the drawing contest for students in Lai Hoa Primary School and the “Ring the Golden Bell” competition for students in Lai Hoa Secondary School, to name but a few.
