Over 40,000 troops and militiamen were mobilized to help locals quickly address the consequences of the flooding.

According to the official figures of the Standing Office under the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, the floods claimed 14 lives, left seven injured and 11 missing, swept away hundreds of houses and inundated a large area of rice fields. It is estimated that the toll of the disaster damage stands at over VND 110 billion. In addition, the landslides caused damage to many roads in the region.

Addressing an emergency meeting of the Standing Office under the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Nguyen Truong Son, Deputy Head of the Committee, asked local authorities to embrace the Prime Minister’s directive on June 24, focusing on saving the injured, searching for the missing and supporting the families of dead victims. In addition, he required an urgent effort to disseminate information and alert locals on the developments of the rains and the subsequent risk of floods, in order to limit any further loss resulting from the disaster.

* The Ministry of National Defense also directed relevant units to mobilize troops and vehicles to assist disaster-hit areas. The General Staff sent a message to Military Regions 1 and 2 and the Border Guard Command, asking them to actively help local authorities and help people surmount the flood’s consequences, evacuate victims from the affected areas to safer places and search for the missing.

Meanwhile, the Lai Chau Provincial Military Command of Military Region 2 sent 102 troops and 185 militiamen to flood-affected areas to help local people overcome the consequences of the disaster.

* Yesterday, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society decided to send VND 250 million in cash to aid the two Northern provinces of Ha Giang and Lai Chau. On the same day, the Hanoi Municipal Red Cross Society donated VND 50 million to support disaster victims.

* The Military Industry-Telecommunications Group (Viettel) required technicians of its local branches to quickly overcome the disaster effects and make all efforts to recover their services and system, contributing to ensuring life-saving communications for local people.
