Present at the event were Tran Duc Luong, former State President; General Pham Van Tra, fformer Defense Minister; leaders and former leaders of the Party, State, and Defense Ministry; historical witnesses; and military and civilian researchers; among others.

The seminar was run by Senior Lieutenant General Le Chiem, Deputy Defense Minister; Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Trong Nghia, Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People’s Army; and representatives of the Commission for Information and Communications, Military Region 9 Command, the An Giang provincial Party Committee, and the Vietnam Institute of Military History.

In his remarks, General Chiem affirmed that the assistance of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts to the Cambodian revolutionary cause is the wholehearted support. As time goes by, this assistance and the Vietnam-Cambodia special fighting alliance remain significant in the history of the two countries and become a symbol of the bright Vietnam-Cambodia solidarity.

Delivering a speech, General Nghia underlined the role and meaning of the victory of the Southwestern border protection war so as to both protect the country’s sacred territorial integrity and help Cambodian people escape from the Pol Pot genocidal regime to enter into an era of independence, freedom and revival. In addition, it also opened a new chapter in the bilateral neighborliness.

At the seminar, the participants reviewed, discussed and re-affirmed the role and historic meaning of the victory of the Southwestern border protection war and the special war-fighting alliance of Vietnamese and Cambodian people and armies.

They also pointed out historical lessons from the victories to continue applying them to the current national construction and defense cause, contributing to promoting the defense-security cooperation and the regional and international integration progress of Vietnam and Cambodia in the new context.
