Military hospital offers advanced treatment for kidney stone disease
PANO – Military Hospital 105 has successfully performed two endoscopic operations with minimally invasive surgical technique (mini-PCNL) to treat kidney stones for the first time, under the support of doctors from the Vietnam - Germany (Viet Duc) Hospital.
Mini-PCNL is a high technique, less invasive to the patient, that possibly replaces open surgery to remove large stones in the kidney and in one third of the upper urethra.

According to Senior Colonel Doctor Tran Van Ha, Deputy Director of Military Hospital 105, the technique has advantages that open surgery does not have, such as short recovery time, high rate of success and short hospitalization duration (3-4 days). Normally, patient can recover and return to work in 7-10 days’ time.
The technique also avoids large surgical scars for patients, which means less possibility of complications that may be caused by a large incision in an open operation; fewer chances of stones remaining after operation; and lower possibility of infection. These are major advantages of the technique due to the capabilities to control the kidney and the upper urethra, he said.
To achieve the success, Military Hospital 105 had actively trained medical staff and invested in equipment, and asked for support from the Vietnam-Germany Hospital. The successful implementation of the technique is of great significance to the hospital’s treatment for patients, especially for troops, as it reduces the duration of treatment and rehabilitation and patients can quickly return to work.
