The hospital made the first
successful kidney transplant in Vietnam
on June 4, 1992 with the support of foreign experts. The success marked a new
development of Vietnam’s
health sector and started a new medical specialty of organ transplant.
On July 20, 1993, the hospital’s
doctors themselves conducted a kidney transplant on patient Le Thanh Nghiem,
aged 33 in Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province with his older sister as the donor.
That was the seventh kidney transplant of the hospital and the ninth of Vietnam at that
time. After the transplant, Nghiem graduated from university, participated in a
festival for patients with organ transplants in Sydney, Australia
in 1997. His family also welcomed new healthy baby and at present his kidney is
working well.
In the past five years, the number
of patients receiving kidney transplants has tripled in comparison to that of
two decades ago. This year alone, the hospital conducted over 60 kidney transplants.
Addressing the seminar, Major
General, Associate Professor and Doctor Tran Viet Tien, the hospital’s director
said that this prominent achievement resulted from the hospital’s staff’s
all-out efforts and the great contribution of domestic and international
hospitals as well as organ transplant experts.
The hospital has been awarded
with various noble orders and titles in recognition of its achievements in organ
transplant over the past years.
