PANO – The military history sector has obtained significant achievements over the past time, affirmed delegates at the 7th Military History Conference held by the Defense Ministry on August 24 morning in Hanoi.
The conference to review the military history work across the army drew the participation of Deputy Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Le Chiem; representatives of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, general departments, defense agencies, defense education and training institutions; defense and civilian historians; and military history experts and workers.
Addressing the opening session, Lieutenant General Le Chiem highly valued the results of the military history work of involved units across the army.

He also asked the conference to focus discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of the military history sector in executing its tasks over the past years, and directions and measures to overcome the drawbacks and limitations to fulfill its missions more successfully in the 2016-20 period and beyond.
Reports at the conference affirmed that the military history work in the army reached good outcomes in the 2010-16 period. The sector has conducted a large number of research projects on the summarization of the wars; published thousands of books and documents of different kinds serving education, training and research; actively promoted information and education on military history in the army and society; applied a number of results of scientific research on the military, wars and military art into reality; improved knowledge and expertise in military history for military history experts and workers through regular training and refreshing courses; and proactively expanded cooperation and exchange with foreign partners.
Particularly, defense agencies and military units have researched or composed 1,625 projects, and released 1,195 publications and research projects rich in scientific content since 2010. The Vietnam Military History Institute alone has conducted 73 compilation and research projects, published 59 projects on military history and finished the major project on the summarization of the wars at high quality.
Remarkably, the military history sector has explained and clarified a number of historical issues as well as provided historical evidence demonstrating the wrong views and evil attempts of hostile forces to distort Vietnam’s history, contributing to protecting the Party’s viewpoint and policy as well as promoting patriotism and national pride among troops and people.
Seven out of the total 12 reports were delivered at the conference, pointing both achievements and limitations of the military history sector over the past years, offering solutions to the sector’s overcoming the drawbacks and giving proposals suggestions to the Defense Ministry and its agencies with the aim of fostering military history work across the army.
The conference agreed on several directions and tasks of military history work in the 2016-20 period, focusing on renovating methods of leadership in implementing military history work; regularly checking military history work and attaching it to other missions of defense agencies and military units; deploying and finishing military history projects as scheduled while ensuring the quality; contributing much to protecting the Party’s political viewpoint, the State’s policies and laws; ensuring the historical objectivity and truth in military history work; effectively applying results of research projects into the reality; perfecting the organization of defense historians and military history experts as well as staff of the whole military history sector; systemizing military history books, studies, documents and figures; summarizing areas of military operations, military art and history of the armed forces since 1975; summarizing major battles and drawing lessons from both victories and losses; and actively promoting cooperation with domestic and international agencies and organizations, particularly Laos and Cambodia, with the aim of raising the efficiency of military history work.
At the conference, Lieutenant General Le Chiem on behalf of the Defense Minister presented certificates of merit to 27 organizations and 27 individuals with their outstanding achievements in military history work in the period of 2010-2016.
