According to Gen. Quyet, it was also a good start for a new security mechanism, creating chances to boost defense-security cooperation among ASEAN countries and between ASEAN and its partners with the aim of building trust, responding to common security challenges, and confirming commitments with the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia and basic principles on sovereignty, equality, non-interference, consensus, and unity in diversity.

The Vietnamese official spoke highly of positive outcomes in defense cooperation within ADMM+ in all seven fields, namely humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, maritime security, military medicine, anti-terrorism, peacekeeping operations, humanitarian mine action, and cyber security.

An overview of the workshop

Apart from advantages and good results, ASEAN cooperation within ADMM+ has also weathered numerous difficulties and challenges posed by regional and global geopolitical changes.

Given a very complicated political and security environment in the region and the world and new challenges to peace, stability, and cooperation in Southeast Asia and the entire Indo-Pacific region, Gen. Quyet underlined that ASEAN should constantly strengthen its capacity and resilience to consolidate and promote its central role in regional defense and security cooperation mechanisms, including ADMM+, improve the effectiveness of cooperation to respond to common security challenges for security and interests of each country, and for peace and stability in the region and the world.

As planned, participants discussed three topics, namely the global and regional geopolitical changes and challenges for ASEAN, the impact of world and regional situations on ADMM+ and ASEAN’s centrality, and the necessity and solutions to strengthen ASEAN's capacity and resilience in ADMM+.

Since its inception in 2007, NADI has promoted its role as an advisory forum on regional defense and security issues for the ADMM, and made proposals to enhance defense and security cooperation among ASEAN countries and between ASEAN and its partners.
