During the call, General Vinh informed the U.K. side of the COVID-19 situation in Vietnam, stressing that Vietnam has achieved success in controlling the disease thanks to the engagement of the whole political system and the firm direction of the Government, as well as the participation of all ministries, agencies and localities, with the military playing an important and active role.

He underlined the importance of international cooperation in COVID-19 fight, expressed thanks to the U.K. Ministry of Defense for their collaboration in information sharing, and hoped to receive more support from the ministry amid the complicated pandemic.

On the occasion, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh and Minister of State for Defense Annabel Goldie reviewed the outcomes of the bilateral defense ties over the past time, agreed on contents of the bilateral defense cooperation in the time to come, and pledged to not let the pandemic affect their defense cooperation.

General Vinh thanked the U.K. Ministry of Defense for support for improving the capabilities of and deploying Vietnam’s Level-two field Hospital Rotations 1 and 2 to South Sudan.

The two sides affirmed that their defense ties are developing fruitfully. They agreed to continue boosting cooperation in different areas such as delegation exchange, defense policy dialogue, training for U.N. peacekeeping, and so on.

In addition, General Vinh briefed U.K. Minister of State for Defense Annabel Goldie on the schedule for the events within Vietnam’s 2020 ASEAN Chairmanship and when the country is a non-permanent member of the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council in the 2020-2021 period.

He stressed that Vietnam supports the U.K.’s responsible participation in regional cooperation mechanisms in accordance with ASEAN’s unanimity principle, and suggested that the U.K. side assist Vietnam in helping the country fulfill its roles as the ASEAN Chair in 2020 and a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council in the 2020 - 2021 period.
