General Chien made the statement at a meeting of the inter-sectoral working group, the Ministry of National Defense’s steering committee on Vietnam’s participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations on December 27 in Hanoi.
The meeting reviewed the country’s engagement in U.N. peacekeeping operations in 2022 and mapped out key missions for 2023.
Regarding the task performance of Vietnamese peacekeepers this year, Major General Hoang Kim Phung, Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations (VNDPKO) underlined the acknowledgement and high appreciation of the leadership of the U.N. Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) to the contribution and dedication of Vietnamese “blue berets,” especially the initiatives, breakthroughs, role of the Engineering Company Rotation 1 in carrying out military, mass mobilization, and humanitarian assistance duties in the host country.
The official gave proposals and suggestions to improve the efficiency of Vietnam’s peacekeeping activities in the time ahead. These will include the adjustment in policies for the peacekeepers in line with the new situation and mission requirements, especially encouraging servicewomen to join the force, the organization of delegations of technical experts to U.N. missions to inspect and give technical assistance to Vietnamese peacekeepers in task implementation.

The UNDPKO director also emphasized missions for 2023 including the preparations for the U.N. peacekeeping operation exercise within the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus and the Vietnam - India bilateral army exercise (VIMBAX), and the hosting of the meeting of the ASEAN peacekeeping center network.
In his concluding speech, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien highlighted the outcomes of the military and public security forces engaged in U.N. peacekeeping operations this year. He asked relevant agencies and units to actively prepare personnel, concentrate on training, equipment purchase, and other preparations, particularly thought, policies, and affairs related to troops’ family. He also agreed to the proposal on improving the legal system on participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations.

The same day, at the VNDPKO headquarters, the Ministry of National Defense debuted the Engineering Company Rotation 2.

Addressing the ceremony, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien asked relevant agencies and units to actively make preparations for the company. He requested the company members to keep political and ideological stance, good morality, observe discipline while undertaking missions abroad. He also asked for safe and effective implementation of training plans on foreign language, expertise, pre-deployment, peacekeeping work close to the real needs.
The 203-member Engineering Company Rotation 2 consists of 22 servicewomen. As scheduled, it will replace the Engineering Company Rotation 1 in UNISFA in June 2023.
