General Phan Van Giang noted that the bilateral defense cooperation has been implemented effectively based on the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding inked by the two sides. Their cooperation focuses on delegation exchange, dialogue and consultation, training, U.N. peacekeeping operations, information sharing, and multilateral defense cooperation, especially within the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus).

General Phan Van Giang thanked New Zealand for supporting the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense in English language training and sharing experience in psychological healthcare for forces preparing to participate in U.N. peacekeeping operations.
General Phan Van Giang expressed his hope that both sides would continue to deepen existing cooperation activities and expand into potential areas. He also invited leaders of the New Zealand Ministry of Defense and defense enterprises to attend the third Vietnam Defense Expo late this year.
Ambassador Caroline Beresford emphasized that New Zealand and Vietnam share many similarities in upholding international law for regional peace and prosperity. The ambassador expressed her hope for the two countries to continue promoting agreed-upon cooperation contents, with a focus on training and U.N. peacekeeping operations.

He expressed his belief that with extensive diplomatic experience, the ambassador would serve as an effective bridge to promote cooperation between the two countries, including defense ties.

General Phan Van Giang highlighted that over nearly three decades since the establishment of diplomatic ties (in 1999), the Vietnam-Saudi Arabia relations have maintained positive development momentum across various fields, including politics, economy, trade, energy, and tourism. The two countries have become each other’s leading partners in their respective regions. Defense cooperation has also achieved positive results in fields of delegation exchange and defense industry. However, he highlighted that the potential for cooperation remains big.

General Phan Van Giang suggested the ambassador pay attention to promoting bilateral defense cooperation, focusing on delegation exchange, education and training, U.N. peacekeeping operations, logistics, military medicine, search and rescue, mine action, and overcoming war consequences, among others.
General Phan Van Giang affirmed that the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense is willing to facilitate Saudi Arabian defense enterprises’ participation in the third Vietnam Defense Expo this December, opening up opportunities for defense industry cooperation with Vietnam and global partners.
For his part, the ambassador underlined that he would make efforts to promote increasingly substantive cooperation between the two countries and the two defense ministries, particularly in delegation exchange, mine action, and addressing the aftermath of war.
