Vietnam - Canada defense cooperation yields positive results

Lieutenant General Le Quang Dao congratulated Lieutenant General Derek Macaulay and expressed his belief in the Canadian officer’s successful tenure. The host expressed delight that the Vietnam - Canada comprehensive partnership continues to develop positively, becoming deeper and more substantive across multiple fields.

Lieutenant General Le Quang Dao emphasized that recently, based on the consensus of both defense ministries’ leaders, signed agreements, and the 2024-2026 Defense Cooperation Plan, bilateral defense ties have achieved positive outcomes. These include delegation exchanges, dialogue and consultation, training, U.N. peacekeeping, defense industry, and mutual support at multilateral international forums.

For his part, Lieutenant General Derek Macaulay highlighted that Canada highly values its relations with Indo-Pacific countries, particularly its comprehensive partnership with Vietnam. He affirmed his commitment to promoting bilateral relations in general and making defense cooperation between Canada and Vietnam increasingly substantive and effective.

Lieutenant General Le Quang Dao hoped that in the coming time, Lieutenant General Derek Macaulay would continue serving as a bridge to boost bilateral defense cooperation. Focus should be placed on delegation exchanges, dialogue and consultation, training, U.N. peacekeeping, inter-service cooperation, and mutual consultation at multilateral defense and security mechanisms. In addition, both sides should expand cooperation in potential areas, such as search and rescue, cybersecurity, and border management.

The deputy chief of the General Staff also proposed that Canada explore the possibility of assisting Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of war. He noted that the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense has invited leaders of the Canadian Department of National Defense and Armed Forces to attend the third Vietnam International Defense Expo this December. He affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to facilitate Canadian enterprises in introducing their products and exploring cooperation opportunities in the country.
