Vietnam and the United States should boost cooperation in humanitarian aid and natural disaster relief, Admiral Robert F. Willard, the Commander of the US Pacific Fleet stated at a news conference on March 9th in Hanoi.
During his visit to Vietnam, the Admiral met with Vietnamese officials from the Defense Ministry, visited the Nha Trang Military Academy and had talks with his counterparts in the Vietnamese Navy in Haiphong.
At the meetings, the two sides discussed issues of common interest and potential areas for future cooperation between the two country’s armed forces.
According to Admiral Robert F. Willard, the two sides are now cooperating in several important areas, namely naval security, maritime cooperation and combating terrorism.
He said that humanitarian aid and natural disaster relief are the two key issues that the two sides should more closely work together on in response to current complex climatic changes being caused by global warming.
