In April 2011, the Vietnamese Defense Minister signed Decision No. 1078/QD-BQP approving the project and assigning the Air Defense - Air Force Service to managing the project.
Under the decision, the service was responsible for coordinating with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Vietnam to implement the project in 2 phases: Phase 1 from August 2012 to the end of December 2015 and Phase 2 from January 2016 to November 2018.
After seven years of implementation, the project has detoxified more than 90,000 cubic meters of contaminated soil with a dioxin concentration level of above 1,000 parts per trillion (ppt), as well as buried and isolated 50,000 cubic meters of contaminated soil with a dioxin concentration level of under 1,000ppt.
The project finished the cleaning of nearly 30ha of land for an expansion of Da Nang International Airport and socio-economic development projects of the city.
During the time implementing the project, Vietnamese and US experts drew valuable experience from dealing with dioxin-contaminated land and got a deeper mutual understanding of the two countries and peoples.
