At the meeting, head delegates said that ASEAN has been facing a series of traditional and non-traditional security challenges, such as competition among major powers, the COVID-19 pandemic, cyber security, terrorism, maritime security, and transnational crimes.
They agreed that with close coordination among ASEAN nations, especially their military intelligence forces, these challenges can be addressed and managed. They also emphasized the importance of the intensive, effective and practical cooperation among ASEAN military intelligence agencies to improve ASEAN countries’ readiness and responses to current regional challenges.
In his speech, the Vietnamese head delegate addressed the COVID-19 pandemic, competition among major powers, maritime security, and approaches to enhancing cooperation among ASEAN military intelligence forces.
The Vietnamese officer also announced that Vietnam will host a meeting of a working group to complete the concept document of the AMIC.
At the meeting Vietnam’s initiative on establishing a ASEAN Military Intelligence Community, proposed at the AMIM-17, received a big applause from the participants. The delegates also showed their support for the Brunei-proposed initiative on the ASEAN Junior Intelligence Interaction Program (AJIIP) and the building of its concept document.
Both aforementioned initiatives were included in the joint statement of the ACDFM-18.
