The three warships are helicopter destroyer JS Kaga, missile destroyer Ikazuchi and submarine Shoryu, which carry 635 officers and sailors onboard. (Among them 399 are on Kaga, 162 on Ikazuchi, and 74 on Shoryu).

The visit of the three Japanese ships aims to get fuel, food and fresh water as well as ensure other logistical supplies and conduct technical maintenance during their long training program at sea.
