Vietnam and WEF established ties in 1989. Since then, high-level leaders of Vietnam have regularly attended WEF meetings in Davos and WEF on East Asia. Member of the WEF Managing Board Philipp Roesler visited Vietnam on November 28, 2014; July, 22, 2015; and April 25, 2016. As for the Vietnamese side, former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended WEF Davos meetings in 2007 and 2010, which yielded important results, opening up a new development period in the Vietnam-WEF relations.
In recent years, Vietnam has actively participated in activities of WEF on East Asia. From 2012 to 2014, former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung joined WEF on East Asia held in Thailand, Myanmar, and the Philippines. In 2010, WEF on East Asia was held in Ho Chi Minh City, attracting around 450 delegates. On October 10, 2016, on the occasion of the 8th CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam) Summit and 7th ACMECS (Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy), Vietnam and WEF co-held WEF on the Mekong River in order to promote the Mekong sub-region to the world community and leading groups. This is an important landmark in the Vietnam-WEF relations, highly appreciated by WEF and the regional business community.
The annual WEF Meeting 2017 in Davos this year, themed “Responsive and Responsible Leadership,” is to discuss various groups of issues, including enhancement of global administration; response to security instability and crises; promotion of inclusive and sustainable development in the context of slow world economic growth; national and regional economic structuring and social reform; development of industrial systems and new business models in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. The forum will also discuss the implementation of WEF initiatives in various areas.
Attending the meeting this year, the Vietnamese l delegation, led by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, will send out a clear message of the economic prospect and resolve of Vietnam in comprehensively reforming the country and its proactive international integration. This shows the strong commitment of a constructive and responsive Government of Vietnam, suitable with the meeting’s theme “Responsive and Responsible Leadership.”
The meeting is also a chance for Vietnam to promote the role and positions of the country as the host of APEC 2017 so as to attract the attention and support of the international community for activities of the APEC Year 2017.
