Upgraded Thu Ngu flagpole opens to public
PANO – Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Construction and Department of Planning and Architecture co-held a ceremony on January 4 to inaugurate the revised project of the Thu Ngu flagpole in District 1.
The flagpole was built in 1865 in Bach Dang Wharf in Nguyen Thai Binh Ward to guide vessels navigating in canals in the Sai Gon-Gia Dinh area. It was recognized as a city-level relic in 2016.

Upgraded Thu Ngu flagpole |
In the fourth quarter of last year, the city decided to upgrade the project without affecting the integrity of the landmark structure, its original character, or its historical or cultural values. Particularly, the renovation included essential maintenance for the flagpole, a revamp of the base, and upgrading of a 3.500 sq.m area around the flagpole in Bach Dang Park.
The flagpole, along with Nha Rong (Dragon House) Harbor, the Bach Dang Wharf, and Mong Bridge, are the icons of the city that form into a historical and cultural complex. The historical site is expected to offer a public space to people, help promote history education for young generations, and promote tourism development in the city.
