The construction of the 38.8-meter-tall flagpole started on April 20, 2016, at a cost of  VND 3.56 billion funded by the Quang Tri provincial People’s Committee. Built on an area of 24 sq.m, the  national flagpole is the biggest of this kind ever built on Vietnamese islands.

Located 30km from the Vinh Linh beach, Con Co Island, crossing the 17th parallel, is considered an “outpost watch” due to its location.

The national flagpole on Con Co island is expected to be an attractive tourist destination, and a symbol for national independence and freedom at sea.

According to a plan on tourism development of Con Co island, local authorities hope  to receive 20,000-25,000 visitors to the island per year by 2020.
