PANO – Like other localities in Vietnam, flower growers in Sa Dec village, Sa Dec district, Dong Thap province, one of the largest flower growing villages in the Mekong river delta, is in the midst of the busiest period of the year. Farmers are hastily harvesting varieties of flowers and ornamental plants to bring them to different localities of the country for sale.

Here are some photos of the village in the harvest period.

A few weeks before the Lunar New Year Festival, traders gather a hundred kinds of flowers and ornamental plants to distribute to localities across the country. The biggest market is Ho Chi Minh City.
Visiting Sa Dec flower village, tourists might find themselves in a fairyland with different kinds of flowers: the daisy, dahlia, rose, hydrangea, orchid, tulip, and lily. The flowers have lured visitors by their beauty and fragrances.
Flowers are mostly planted on long beds to be easily watered. Walking in the flower garden, visitors seem to be lost in the hanging garden of Babylon with varieties of flowers on trellises above their heads.
20 days before Lunar New Year festival is the busiest period of flower growers in the village and more labour is needed. That is why hundreds of jobs are created for local people.
Besides the fertile soil, unique techniques, and skilled hands of farmers, the flower growing industry is strongly affected by weather conditions. This year is seen as unsuccessful, as some kinds of flowers blossomed early due to hot weather.
Although flower growing is a low profit business, villagers with great passion still maintain and develop it for their next generations.
Coming to the village, friendly farmers will happily give visitors information relating to the origins and significance of flowers and plants as well as the century–old history of the flower growing village. Visitors can also be provided with the techniques on horticulture and the price of each kind of flower.
