PANO – 2,000 people, including international friends, ambassadors, overseas students in Hanoi and Vietnamese citizens, took part in the program, “Cultural Festive Day of Peace”, held by the city People’s Committee on October 12th in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Capital Liberation’s Day and the 15th anniversary of its recognition as the “City for Peace” by the UNESCO.  

Addressing the opening ceremony, Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen The Thao briefed the participants on the city’s achievements over the past years. He said that in spite of facing difficulties and challenges, Hanoi has developed, becoming a political, economic, and cultural centre of the nation. “Hanoi has been striving to build a peaceful, prosperous, just and humane city,” said Nguyen The Thao.

The city’s Chairman stressed that the title “Hanoi-The City for Peace” showed the recognition and acknowledgement of the international community to the city. It is a motivation for Hanoi to promote beautiful traditions and achievements in the development process to deserve to the trust and hope of the nation and international community.

At the ceremony, Hanoi honoured and presented the title, “Honorary Citizen of Hanoi Capital”, to 12 foreigners with great contributions to the development of the city in different fields.

Representing the honoured, Dr. Katherine Mulle-Marin, Head of UNESCO’s Representative Office in Vietnam, expressed her love for Hanoi, affirming that everyone living in Hanoi enjoyed peace and friendship, and Hanoi deserved to the title, “The city for peace”. “I am proud to be a Hanoian”, touchingly said Katherine Mulle- Marin.

At the end of the event, Hanoi’s leaders, international friends and representatives of Hanoians released balloons and doves to send a message of peace to both domestic and international people.

In the framework of the program, the participants took part in cultural activities, a walk and a cycling around Hoan Kiem Lake in response to the festive day for peace.
