The event was jointly held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s General Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control (GDNDPC), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the US Department of State and the US Forest Service (USFS).

According to Nguyen Truong Son, deputy head of the GDNDPC, the command system for natural disaster prevention and control in Vietnam has shown efficiency as it gives timely directions, helping mitigate human and property losses while making rapid recovery in disaster-hit areas.

The USFS’s experience in ICS application as well as its technical support for Vietnam will help the country complete the command system responding to natural disasters and search and rescue work, particularly in the context of abnormal weather conditions, he added.

During the four-day workshop, participants will discuss Vietnam’s natural calamity prevention system, Multi-Agency Coordinating (MAC) system, emergency operations centre, and incident management procedures, among others.

Under the US-ASEAN cooperation programme in natural disaster management, the GDNDPC and the USFS joined hands to develop a non-project aid for training and enhancing management capacity in natural disaster prevention and control in Vietnam. The workshop is the first activity within the framework of this programme.
