Reportedly, KAYO, a cargo ship, 92 meters long, 16 meters wide, registered under the flag of St. Kitts & Nevis, was transporting clay from Malaysia’s Lumut Port to Hon Gai, Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province. Among 15 crew-members aboard, 13 were Vietnamese, one Indian, and one Bangladeshi.
At 23:21 on December 5 (Vietnam time), when the ship was about 65 nautical miles to the east of the Malaysian coast, KAYO listed 15 degrees to starboard and became unstable. The captain immediately issued a distress call requesting assistance. At the time of the incident, the area faced northeasterly winds of level 4-5 and waves 1-2 meters high.
Upon receiving news via the Hai Phong Coastal Information Station, Vietnam MRCC contacted Malaysia MRCC, requesting urgent support measures to ensure the safety of the KAYO crew. The center also reported the situation to the Vietnam Maritime and Waterways Administration and the National Civil Defense Steering Committee.
In response to Vietnam MRCC’s request, Malaysia MRCC deployed the coast guard vessel KM SEBATIK to quickly reach the scene, approach KAYO, rescue all crew-members, and assist in towing the vessel to anchor at Kemaman Port, Malaysia. All crew-members on board KAYO were safe and in normal health condition.
Previously, on January 11, 2025, Vietnam MRCC coordinated with Malaysia MRCC to successfully rescue 18 Vietnamese crew-members from vessel Dolphin 18 flying Vietnam’s flag after it encountered an incident in Malaysian waters.
