The event was a good chance for members of VWU, women’s unions at all levels, and non-governmental organizations to exchange with delegates from ministries and departments on difficulties and challenges facing women and discuss solutions to address them.

In her opening remarks, VWU Vice President Nguyen Thi Minh Huong pointed out gender stereotypes of the role, capacities and contribution of women in natural disaster prevention and control and climate change response.

She stressed women’s important role in families, communities and their capacity to create resources for natural disaster adaptation and mitigation.

Women should be empowered to meet their own needs, helping themselves, their families and communities cope with extreme weather conditions caused by climate change, Ms. Huong emphasized.

For her part, Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Ann Mawe said that Sweden is the first country to pursue the feminist foreign policy that addresses inequality and focuses on enhancing the rights, representation and resources of women and girls globally.

According to the Swedish diplomat, the Swedish government has recently announced a doubling of climate change financing contributions to USD 1.75 billion by 2025, making Sweden one of the biggest contributors  to climate finance per capita.

She also emphasized the responsibility of policy makers for forming a resilient community to not worsen the gender inequality.

At the event, Elisa Fernandez Saenz, Country Representative of U.N. Women in Vietnam, said climate, environment and natural disaster policies and programs should put women and girls at the center of decision-making. 

She also called for gender mainstreaming in policies and programs on mitigation of natural disasters, climate and environment.
