Commemoration ceremony for the victims of the flash flood in Nu village |
The event took place in a deeply emotional and respectful atmosphere.
Typhoon Yagi, the third storm hitting Vietnam in 2024, struck northern Vietnam in September 2024, causing widespread flooding and landslides. Lao Cai was among the hardest-hit provinces and its Nu village suffered catastrophic destruction and loss of life.
Speaking at the event, Phuc Khanh commune leader recalled the tragic night when a massive landslide from Mount Con Voi unleashed a torrent of mud and rocks, wiping out the village in moments. The flood destroyed 37 of 39 homes and claimed 67 lives, including elders and children.
Immediately after the disaster, under the direct direction of the Prime Minister and provincial leaders, hundreds of troops and rescue personnel were mobilized to aid survivors and restore stability. Domestic and international donors gave both material and spiritual support, helping Nu village recover.

Gift presentation to families of the deceased |
What stood out most was the resilience and determination of local residents. Despite tremendous losses, they did not give up. Families worked together to restore farming, and support one another to rise in life. Their spirit inspired organizations and benefactors to continue their assistance.
As a result, Nu village has seen remarkable changes in just one year. Roads are accessible, many families now live in strong homes, and children study in spacious classrooms. Local residents’ livelihoods are also recovering. New agricultural and vocational programs have helped households earn income and escape poverty. Cultural and sports activities have resumed, strengthening locals’ solidarity.
While challenges remain, Nu village has overcome the most difficult phase and is on a steady path of recovery. The villagers are determined to rebuild and transform it into a “Happy Village,” honoring nationwide support.
