She made the statement at a regular press conference in Hanoi on August 3 in response to reporters’ queries about Vietnam’s recent apprehension of some individuals. She said the arrestees had the signs of infringing upon Vietnam’s laws and the investigations have been conducted in accordance with the country’s criminal procedures. “As in other countries around the world, any legal infringements in Vietnam will be severely treated according to Vietnam’s law,” she stressed. 

Also at the press briefing, Hang reiterated that Vietnam strongly opposes inhuman behaviors, use or threat to use force against its fishermen, answering reporters’ queries about Vietnam’s reaction to the information that Vietnamese fishing vessels were hit by foreign ones in the East Sea (South China Sea). According to the spokesperson, functional authorities of Vietnam are clarifying information related to Binh Dinh fishing vessel 96101TS and Khanh Hoa fishing vessel 95858TS.

Talking about the case of Trinh Xuan Thanh, Hang told reporters that Vietnam regrets the statement by the German Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson on August 2 pertaining to Thanh. According to the Ministry of Public Security and the media, Trinh Xuan Thanh turned himself in to police in Vietnam on July 31 and relevant authorities of Vietnam are investigating the case, the spokesperson said. “Vietnam always treasures, and wants to maintain and develop strategic partnership with Germany,” Hang said. 

Trinh Xuan Thanh, former Chairman of the PetroVietnam Construction Corporation (PVC) had fled Vietnam after he was found to have violated State regulations on economic management resulting in losses of nearly VND 3.3 trillion (USD 142 million) for the PVC during his leadership.

On September 16, 2016, the Ministry of Public Security’s Investigation Police Agency launched criminal proceedings against Thanh.

He was expelled from the Party.
