Reporters of the People’s Army Newspaper (PAN) had a chance to visit the defense-economic zones of Defense-Economic Unit 5 in the 2021-2030 period. They were impressed by cultivation and husbandry models, such as hybrid cow concentrated breeding, freshwater fish, egg-laying duck raising, fruit tree growing, wet rice cultivation, among others.

According to Senior Colonel Hoang Van Vo, Head of the Defense-Economic Unit 5, the young intellectuals have made contribution to the implementation of the aforementioned outstanding models. They have applied what they have learnt to reality, and instructed the locals to carry out the models.

The PAN’s reporters visited Ha Van Thuan’s family in Cum village, Quang Chieu commune, Muong Lat district. In 2020, his family received a breeding cow and then joined a refresher course on raising breeding cows for reproduction, organized by the young intellectuals from Defense-Economic Unit 5. Thanks to the instruction and support, his family knew how to raise breeding cows. The breeding cow has grown well and has just given birth to two calves. His family is very grateful to the youths.

For Luong Van Thien’s family in Pieng Tat village, Muong Chanh commune, Muong Lat district, his life is in stable condition now thanks to the meaningful support of troops and young intellectuals from Defense-Economic Unit 5. In 2020, the troops and youths supported his family to plant 0.6ha of mangoes and jack-fruit, and instructed them on how to take care of other fruit trees. In 2021, Thien harvested three tons of fruit, earning more than VND 50 million.

Affiliates of Defense-Economic Unit 5 have worked with the local authorities, and colleges and universities in the localities where they are stationed to select 24 young intellectuals. They have been divided into two teams, including the Economic-Technical team, and the social work team, and sent to production units and the military-civil medical infirmaries. Accordingly, the youths have opened five literacy classes, eight refresher courses on cultivation and husbandry techniques, provided free health check-ups and medicines to 750 people, to name but a few.

They have also mobilized the locals to observe the Party’s guidelines and State’s policies and laws, as well as regulations of the localities.

Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Muong Lat district Party Committee Trieu Minh Xiet affirmed that the youths’ wholeheartedness has contributed to developing local socio-economy and culture while enhancing defense and security, ensuring political security and social order in the area.
