Leaders of Thong Thu commune and Thong Thu Border Post inquire after families affected by storms and whirlwinds. |
In Huoi Son village, Tam Thai commune, Nghe An province, a thunderstorm accompanied by a whirlwind swept through on the night of April 28 and the early hours of April 29, tearing roofs off houses, toppling trees and civilian bridges, and causing serious damage to local people’s property.
Immediately after receiving the information, Tam Hop Border Post under the Nghe An provincial Border Guard Command promptly mobilized personnel to affected areas to help local people clear debris, reinforce house structures, repair damaged roofs, and clean up the surrounding environment. Apart from providing manpower support, the unit also coordinated with local authorities to distribute essential supplies, helping affected families stabilize their lives.
In Thong Thu border commune on the evening of May 3, a severe hailstorm and whirlwind tore the roof off the house of Quang Duc Tinh, a local of Muong Phu village, causing extensive damage to the family’s belongings. Despite the continuing heavy rain, officers and soldiers of Thong Thu Border Post worked through the night to provide temporary shelter and prioritize safe accommodation for the elderly and children.
Meanwhile, in Quang Tri province, a whirlwind that struck Ra Lay hamlet in Dakrong commune on the late afternoon of May 2 completely blew away the roofs of the houses belonging to Ho Ngoc Thinh, born in 1978, and Ho Van Non, born in 2001. Immediately after the incident, Ba Nang Border Post deployed 12 officers and soldiers to the scene to collect twisted metal roofing sheets and reinforce the roof trusses and support columns, ensuring the houses could withstand subsequent strong winds.
On the front line of search and rescue operations, at Nhat Le beach in Quang Tri province, a tourist was narrowly rescued from drowning thanks to the timely detection and rescue efforts of officers from Nhat Le Border Post. After receiving first aid and intensive resuscitation, the victim was brought out of critical condition.
Notably, on May 4 morning, at the frontline island district of Bach Long Vi in Hai Phong city, Bach Long Vi Border Post discovered a foreign fishing vessel numbered 14106, along with four crew members, stranded on a reef. As the vessel faced the risk of being smashed apart by strong waves, border troops quickly launched a rescue operation, safely bringing the panicked crew members ashore and carrying out all humanitarian support measures in accordance with regulations.
In the early hours of May 5, while assisting vessel 14106 into the Bach Long Vi harbor shelter area, officers of Bach Long Vi Border Post discovered another foreign fishing vessel coded 13377, stranded near the island, approximately 200 meters from the location of the earlier incident. The vessel carried six foreign crew members. All crew members were successfully rescued and safely brought ashore by the border guard force.

Medical staff of Hai Phong border guards provide health check-ups for distressed fishermen |
In remote border areas, where economic conditions remain challenging, the presence of the border guard force serves as a bridge connecting the Party’s will with people’s aspirations, reflecting the noble qualities of Uncle Ho’s soldiers in their tasks of safeguarding the Fatherland and serving the people.
The gratitude of local people is the greatest reward for every soldier. It reaffirms that, under any circumstances, border guards always stand side by side with people in times of hardship.
